French St Martin tourism officials in a recent statement said, that while there will be some soft openings of guesthouses before the end of the year, they do not anticipate hotel inventory to be back to normal until the 2018-2019 season with damages estimated at $3.5 billion.
The following properties are working to reopen by:
- Alamanda Resort will reopen in fall 2018
- Belmond La Samanna will not reopen until at least April 28, 2018
- Grand Case Beach Club may take up to a year to rebuild and repair
In the meanwhile, travelers can find a growing list of hotels in St Maarten that are open, post hurricanes.
Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy recently announced that the cruise line will return to St Maarten in January 2018. This is fantastic news for the economy of St Maarten who’s dependent on tourism.
The island is expecting its first commercial cruise to call into port as early as November 5 with Royal Caribbean.

Sunset Beach Bar St Maarten after Hurricane Irma

Sunset Beach bar Maho, St Maarten
By no means is this posting about being disrespectful given the situation on the Island. The people of St Maarten and St Martin are resilient and are trying to move beyond the devastation caused by Irma.
The Sunset Beach Bar is to many vistors/vacationers the hotspot on the Island. It looks like it came out of the storm with severe damages but maybe not as ‘bad’ as expected. Although we have a long way to go, hopefully it can resume business soon and welcome tourist once again and (re)build the Island’s economy.
