Reports about casualties vary wildly

MARIGOT – Hurricane Irma has destroyed 95 percent of Saint Martin, the president of the Collakenectivité, Daniel Gibbs has said. A report in the free newsletter Fax Info mentions that Irma has t 8 lives and injured 20 people.

However, residents of French Quarter have reported 19 dead in their district alone, while there was earlier mention of 11 fatalities in Grand Case – putting the total between 30 and 40. Other sources told this newspaper that hundreds of people are still missing, suggesting that the death toll is still likely to rise.

President Gibbs expressed in a brief public message his gratitude towards the public services and also to citizens who sprang into action after the passing of Hurricane Irma to help free the roads and their environment of debris. Gibbs also thanked companies that answered the call for assistance with the massive cleanup operation.
“There is still a lot of debris to clean up, but fifteen days after the passage of the hurricane we can all be proud of the work we have accomplished,” Gibbs said.

The French telecom operator Dauphin has made several Wifi hotspots available for internet connectivity. They are located in front of the company’s building in Marigot, at Semsamar, at the Cul de Sac roundabout (near the road towards Pinel Island), at the Aventura building in Hope Estate, in French Quarter in front of the stadium towards the Étang aux Poissons and at the roundabout in Agrément (provided by MSR). All these so-called hotspots have a reach of 500 meters.

Dauphin also provides mobile 2G-3G connectivity in Marigot, Concordia, Rambaud, Morne O’Reilly, Grand Case, Hope Estate, Cul de Sac, Orient Bay, French Quarter and Oyster Pond.

Mike Stamm reports:  (Sept 23rd)

In my opinion we need to dig a little deeper.
Après hurricane looting - however despicable - is something deep rooted.
Every storm I've been in on SXM had it to some extent.
Luis showed us how people from all walks of life plundered. In plain view. An elaborate emergency management system was put in place.
A bomb proof command center bunker was build.
A separate department was installed to prepare us - contingency policies and plans setup in law - with civilian stake holders involved. Seminars and yearly training - major money invested.

All because after Luis we - SXM people - looked at our administrators and said NO MORE!!

No more shame of helicopter shots broadcasted worldwide of the looting vermin crawling over the wreckage of Rams Supermarket (Kooymans location); to name but one instance. Despicable and shameful.
Now we have a predicable re-run. I'm sorry but this is what it is - a deja vu.

Where was the man in charge - our super hero - the disaster expert?

Why was our prime minister and the governor not in our Emergency Command Center - not to mention the ESF heads or their delegates?
How could the ERP (emergency response personnel) be directed when the Major Emergency Response Center is not manned by "The Man in Charge".
The prime minister of Dominica - who doesn't live in a fancy pants villa - was dug up and crawled out of the wreckage of his house. Instead of inaction, blaming the military and pointing fingers, he gave directions to his emergency response personnel under a lot more dire circumstances.

 Reactions...:

Sonja Stamm how right you are

Dorette de Leeuw-Pfennings Right on! Without the competence, skill and leadership of some of the VROMI management (you know who you are), certain private contractors, the Dutch marines and military etc it would have been even worse. An Emergency Management Team should be put in place comprising Disaster managers from VROMI, the fire debt., GEBE, the police dept, the Dutch military and this group only should be in charge during a disaster. Parliamentarians and subsequently ministers are elected based on popularity and vote buying and have zero competence when the caca hits the fan...Of course, our esteemed politicians will never pass this sort of legislation, they just want a meeting on Monday si they can play the blame-game and beat their weak little chests☹️

Mike Stamm This system is already in place - complete with a dedicated hot line to the outside world

Robbie Ferron It is very clear that the lessons of the past were not put into an effective plan .

Mike Stamm The plan is already there Robbie - I know of it firsthand - it just wasn't executed. I am dying to find out what the Section Head of Disaster Section has to say when he's back from Holland. I know him quite well - a gentleman - so I'm not calling his name; but the Prime Minister should have made his way to the bunker situated behind the hospital and fire HQ

Allard Stamm I think it disgraceful that the super expensive gov emergency bunker was not used

Allard Stamm I have no knowledge of who was there but apparently not the PM

Ilismo Ilismo PREACH..My heart aches from what I been hearing. 😢
